I know I'm not alone when it comes to this topic. I also have friends that have feelings of guilt when it comes to the way they raise their kids. I know what it's like because I find myself worrying about certain things too. Here are some reasons the mommy guilt may come into play.
Let's take the t.v for example! My two older kids love watching television. They would watch it all day if I let them but I try to limit it. Don't get me wrong; there have been days where I have let them watch it more than the average child should. Like if their sick or it's snowing or raining and they can't go outside. I also find myself putting it on if I'm trying to make dinner just to keep them quiet and out of my hair. So for this reason, I have mommy guilt.
2. Leaving them with a sitter/nanny
My husband and I don't get out very often and when we have the chance, we jump on it. While I think it's important to be out and to re-connect, I often find it hard to leave. We usually have to sneak out the door by the baby or we will find him sobbing in the window yelling "Mama, Mama!" Here I go again with the mommy guilt!
3. Not being able to spend "Quality Time" with the kids
I find my kids want all of my attention while I'm trying to get certain tasks done around the house. I have a hard time balancing the house and juggling three kids so for this reason, I feel very guilty. I have three children with three very different wants and needs along with dishes to do, laundry to fold and dinner to make. By the time I am done doing most of the housework, it's usually time for homework, dinner and baths. There are days where I may find some time and sit down and play with them. For the most part, I am pretty busy. Again, mommy guilt!
All I can say is that we are all guilty of this from time to time. We are only human.
I will find myself bribing my kids from time to time to eat their vegetables for instance. I will even go as far as to bribing them at the store with a prize if they are all on their best behavior. Honestly though, things like this will often save my sanity!
The point of all this is that I think we as parents need to stop feeling so guilty about the way we parent our kids. If my kids are happy, so am I! And heck if all it takes is a piece of candy to get my kids to behave so I can get through the day, I'm not going to beat myself up. I know that my parents did all the above and I turned out all right. I'm sure our kids will too!
