How Parenting Has Changed-Contest!
August 27, 2012Congratulations to Kimberly Hall who won this Britax stroller! Please contact us with your information!
Have you ever listened to someone from another generation go on and on about the way times have changed when it comes to raising children? Let's face it, things are much different these days! Both parents are much more involved in their children's lives than they were forty or fifty years ago. With that said, I personally think parents nowadays have more stress than they did back when our parents raised us or our grandparents raised their children. Parents these days are expected to "balance it all." By that I mean balance the career, balance family and keep things flowing smoothly.
What the older generation doesn't understand is that times have changed drastically and here's why!
1. Car Safety
Ever wonder how our parents survived? They never had seat belts! Not only that, they didn't have car seats. Mother's were encouraged to travel in back seat holding their newborn babies when coming home from the hospital. Luckily, safety has come a long way since then! In fact keeping our children safe in the car and in the home is much more important than it use to be.
2. Outside Play
These days you can't keep your eyes off your child for two seconds. It seems every time you turn around, another child is missing. Gone are the days when parents would let their kids out in the morning to play with the neighborhood kids. Kids were expected to be home for dinner. Times have certainly changed!
3. Technology
There are certainly many more outside influences like the media and internet. Kids nowadays know a lot more than they should. While there is a lot of good that comes out of kids studying and learning from the internet, there can also be a lot of negativity that comes with the internet and media as well. Our ultimate goal as a parent is to keep children safe and healthy. I think limiting the use of t.v, internet and video games is extremely important. Encouraging better eating habits and exercise should be a top priority.
4. More Outside Influences
I personally think there are many more options for kids to get into trouble these days. There's certainly more drugs and alcohol than there was 50,60 or 70 years ago. There's more pressure to be a certain way or fit into a certain group etc. Bullying is a term used more and more these days than ever before too. This generation of kids have many more outside influences than ever before.
5. Parents are Expected to do it All
By this I mean both parents are expected to do it all. Back when it was custom for the husband to work and the wife to stay home, it's certainly very different now. Both parents are encouraged to work therefore, the child is forced to be put in daycare and basically raised by someone other than their parents. Many parents seem to just scrape by after the cost of daycare and mother's often work just to keep the health insurance for the family. Since the cost of raising a child is a lot higher these days, both parents may have to contribute.
How has parenting changed in your opinion? Do you think it's easier or harder to raise a child these days?

I think that parenting hasn't really changed. The world has changed--things are harder and can be scarier now, but we still need to help our children choose between right and wrong. We teach and love just like before.
Christine mitchell on 08/27/2012
I think that parenting has become so competitve now-n-days! Parents always want to give their kids the new best hing or just give in to them. I just cherish my time with my kids and get them whats in my means where I can afford to pay rent another day!

Great contest, Thanks for the chance!
Kristi C on 08/28/2012
I think basic parenting hasn't changed much, but society has and therefore thing are scarier and we have to be more mindful of what we are teaching our children
Christina p on 08/28/2012
I agree 100% with everything you said above and believe it is much harder these days to raise a child. I would do anything to be able to stay home with my baby boy but my husband and I are both forced to work in order to have a decent affordable health insurance and enough money to properly take care of our child and to try and save up for his future college or whatever he decides to do one day. I feel like we don't get much time to soend together as a family and with our child due to having to both work full time and that makes me sad. I also remember when I was young, my cousin and I woul dplay outside and ride our bikes down the street and we would love it but it's simply not safe to let your child do any of these things now without you right there watching everything they are doing. It's not safe out there for them with all the kidnapping's and other things you hear going on in the news daily. Thank you
Heather R on 08/28/2012
I agree completely with this article. Gone for good are the "good old days" and we are constantly on guard and on watch with our children's every moves. I am blessed to be a stay at home mom, and I still feel this way. And lets not forget about the competitive nature of our nation as well. Having to be the best at everything, best in school to get into a college, best in sports, music, art, etc. It is a tough world they are growing up in, but I know that these kids will adapt and hopefully improve the days we are in.
Deb on 08/31/2012
Parenting has definitely changed! You have to be much more cautious because you really can't trust anyone. I remember playing in my yard for hours. I would never let my kids out now like my parents use to!
Paula on 08/31/2012
I have been a Parent for 31 yrs now, Raised 3 (now adult children, now raising children by adoption and fostercare) I have to agree with everything that has been said. Even now with raising 4, soon to be 5 adopted children. So much has changed just over the 31 years. I will and have keep doing everything for my children and other children in our lifes.

Working mother of three little ones, time with them is more precious than anything money can buy.
Victoria on 08/31/2012
My parents kept us in doors often and we were always with them. I plan on doing the same with my son except finding outdoor active activities for the family to do together and to keep the family fit and in shape and of course safe!!!!

I'm a deaf and single mom. She is my greatest treasure. Since my daughter was born, my life changed completely. She gives me strength to continue. Being a mother is the best thing that has happened in my life. I would like to have for my baby girl.

Cute stroller
Tina bates on 08/31/2012
Enjoying my little girl. How she is growing up so quick. I love my coupon shopping and freebie sites!
Kristian on 09/01/2012
I think that parenting is harder now. Kids are "growing up" sooner then before and know things they should. You have to watch your child like a hawk now and there are a lot of new dos and dont that they didnt have before to keep our children safe. You also have more exspensive toys and techonolgy instead of the dollar store barbies and cheap plastic toys I got when i was a kid.
Loree Johnson on 09/01/2012
I would love to win this stroller we love to go walking everyday and my 5/5 month old loves to be outside.
Jessica Ball on 09/01/2012
It would be nice to finally have something nice for my baby. It's so hard to be able to afford things like this in this economy. It would definitely be put to good use :-)
Marian Jones on 09/01/2012
I am just picturing my son (8 months) and me hitting the trails with this wonderful piece of equipment. Please let my dream become a reality.

parenting has changed alot teen pregnancy and being a single teenaged mom back then, everyone looked at you different and you where the talk of the town the father was also expected to marry you. now being a young single mother is more normal and alittle more accepted then back then and also a hit tv show. i think just the way teen parenting is view has changed alot
April on 09/02/2012
Awesome looking stroller, must be great to take walks with!
Leah Hojnowski on 09/02/2012
I rember when I was a child when you played outside everyones parents kept an eye on everyone kids. If you did some thing wrong they wouldnt text your mom they would beat your butt then take you to your mother and make you tell your mom what you did. Now if another parent even looks at someones kid wrong people assume they are a sex offeneder or a kidnapper. The world is just not what it was twenty ,heck even, ten years ago!!!
Dalia valberde on 09/02/2012
Parenting has changed but I believe for the better. All the technology has provided us with a safer way to raise our children. I don't think parenting has become any easier there will always be challenges but the advances in our every day lives make overcoming those challenges easier. I had my little girl full term but she had breathing problems. Not being able to hold her because she was in intensive care was difficult and heart breaking. I love her to death and I was blessed that she got better.
Melissa Collins on 09/03/2012
Having my daughter changed my life. I suffered through 3 painful miscarriages before I got my angel. She has changed how I look at this world, in all ways. I don't know how I could live without her.
Mariela Viernes on 09/03/2012
Parenting has changed a lot! It's true that with all the technology and safety stuff it has gotten easier. I'm pregnant with my first child and I hope I can get my kid involved in outdoor activities although you have to be much more careful because you really can't trust anyone.
sheri on 09/03/2012
I could really use this stroller im a first time mom
Cristina Juan on 09/03/2012
I personally think raising a child is easy but with the help of the father, is really important for a child to have their father involved to give them love and to support them, but again we do anything for our babies Im blessed with my son, he's my everything and I'm expecting my second one on Jan 20th, Im so excited. There's plenty of technology, child-proof items out there i think is easy this days and safer.
Brittany on 09/04/2012
Im a first time mom and would love this stroller
Amanda Butler on 09/04/2012
I just had my 2nd daughter in June, both of my girls are just amazing! We try to walk daily but it is a struggle to carry the newborn and push the older child in an umbrella stroller, this would definitely be awesome to have! Especially trying to get baby weight off! 31 lbs and counting!
leah pendley on 09/04/2012
I cant even believe how different thigns are. Kids cant ride their bikes alone anymore, and most are not allowed to just go play after school like we were
Nora on 09/04/2012
Things are definitely different now. When I was a kid we were outside all day, we would only come home for lunch and dinner. Now as parents we have to keep such a close eye on our children. It's just not as safe as it used to be! Thinking about it makes me sad because my son will not have the same childhood as I did.
Joanna birch on 09/04/2012
Haha, this is all so true! My grandma has potty trained all her kids before their first birthday, had the same pram for all her children and let them play out til dinner! My mum was from the generation of babies go to sleep in heir tummies, laid back parenting. Now look at the world! Some things have changed for the better, but some things terrify first time mums. Crazy!
belinda on 09/04/2012
I would love to have this stroller for my grand children, It could be used for a boy or girl so it would fit my family great
Belinda B on 09/04/2012
Parenting has changed so much, my oldest is 17 n youngest right now is 3 n just the change with things between their ages is crazy. I'm just glad that I'm not a first time mom with the one on the way.
Marisela on 09/05/2012
I would love to have this stroller, very low income and it would be nice to give my daughter a nice gift. We would love it!! God Bless you

melarie roxas on 09/06/2012
I would want to have this stroller so it is possible for us to carry my child cause she getting heavier, she now turning 3 months old tomorow..
Kimberly Hall on 09/07/2012
Parenting is different today. I would come home from school and eat dinner then played outside until dark. Today, children have to be watched more closely. It is just dangerous. And that truly is sad. But on a brighter note, I would love to win the stroller. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.
MA.CHRISTINA GONZAGA on 09/08/2012

SS on 09/12/2012
AWESOME!!! Would be so excited to win!!
Crissy on 09/12/2012
We all know how cruel this world we live in has become. What's sad, is how some parents choose to ignore the fact that "it" could happen to their child, and allow them to play outside unattended. Or even roam the streets alone as early as 4 years old.
Kait Burke on 09/12/2012
This would be awesome!!!
Lislyn Duncan on 09/13/2012
I think parenting has changed a bit because parents have become a.but more educated on what's going on in the world. Parents have stopped thinking ”oh no no my child” and have started thinking outside of the box. For example spanking...everyone use to do it, but now, parents started thinking to figure other ways to discipline, & doing what works for them
Jaleesa Lauderdale on 09/13/2012
I agree that it's a lot different now, we have more to worry about. I feel the best thing about back 60 yrs ago is the time parents spent with their own kids.
Vivian on 09/13/2012

Wow this would be a wonderful stroller for my upcoming baby :-)
kimberly henson on 09/20/2012
i have 4 children, 3 i raised in the 90s and one whom is 6 years old. i think it is much easier raising the 6 year old, for one im older and also he is being raised in a rural area outside of morgantown wva, the other 3 were raised in the inner city of richmond va which also makes a big difference. my daughter is expecting my first granchild in january and he will be raised here in wv also. its a much slower pace with a down home feel, where everyone knows everyone, with local festivals and friday night football games. so yes there is a huge difference
melanie r. on 09/20/2012
I think that parenting has changed in a sense that there are so many young parents these days and babys born out of wedlock. We have to watch our babies very closely these days and everything is much more expensive than it used to be(toys, clothesetc.) The big one tho, technology. Kids these days no more about technology than someone in their 40's. Hope to win the stroller!
Ilene M on 09/20/2012
Things have definitely changed...just as they will when my kids become parents! I'm sure they will scoff at some of the things we do now because the experts tell us to :-) Parenting is constantly evolving and all we can do is our best and what we feel is right for our family.
Linda Jill Koeninger on 09/20/2012
As our kids grow, they need a classy way to travel!
Linda Jill Koeninger on 09/20/2012

Pick me! Pick me!
LESLIE WHITLEY on 09/22/2012
I'M 31 YEARS OLD&THE DIFFERENCE IN MY GENERATION OF BEING A NEW MOM VS MY MOTHER'S GENERATION, IS WE LIKE TO INCORPORATE STYLE VS JUST THROWING THINGS TOGETHER BC MY GENERATION BELIEVES THAT WE CAN STILL BE SEXY & CLASSY AS NEW MOMS!!IT'S MOTIVATING TO GET STYLISH WITH OUR NEWBORNS OVER BEING IN A SLUGGISH FUNK FROM LESS SLEEP,JUST BECAUSE WE GO THROUGH IT TO BIRTH THESE LITTLE JOYS DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO WALK AROUND LOOKING LIKE IT!
Meghan Gonyeau on 09/23/2012
I love Britax products and would love to win this stroller.
Carrie on 09/24/2012
I'm so happy we can improve all of our products, would not want to use what my parents did. I works in the medical feild and everyone recomends Britax, everything i own so far for a stroller and car seat are from britax

My husband and i have had these conversations multiple times! We have 2 older girls and have a now 4 week old preemie boy. I have decided to stop working full time to be able to take care of our children and finish college. I will probably still have to work part time either at night or the weekend. It's a constant juggling act and you hope everyday that you don't drop a ball!!!
