The Elf on the Shelf

November 25, 2011 | Leave a comment

A few years ago my husband and I discovered the greatest book called The Elf on the Shelf. This children's picture book comes with a little elf. The elf is supposed to watch the children every holiday season and then report back to Santa. The idea is that he is to be hidden and found each day somewhere kids can't touch him. If they touch him, his magic disappears. Your first job is to name your elf to give him his magic. You fill out the picture book at the end and adopt him. In our case we named him Eddie the Elf! This is such a clever idea! In fact my kids love Eddie. They look for him every morning and jump up and down when they find him. It's such a hit in our house that we have actually gone as far as to putting The Elf on the Shelf back in our house in the summer when they were really misbehaving! Believe me when I say it works. They were so afraid they weren't going to get any toys in July for Christmas. I highly recommend this book to family and friends. It's become our Christmas tradition now.

Just remember one thing: The Elf on the Shelf states: "There's only one rule that you have to follow so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won't hear all I've seen or I know."

Tune in tonight for the first premier of “The Elf on the Shelf: An Elf’s Story”
8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, CBS.

Thanksgiving Fun For Kids!

November 19, 2011 | Leave a comment

Now that Thanksgiving is approaching, it's a good time to share some facts with the kids. They are sure to get a kick out of these. It always makes for a fun dinner topic!

Thanksgiving History

Did you know the Pilgrims sailed on a ship called the Mayflower to get to North America?

Did you know that the Plymouth pilgrims were the first to celebrate Thanksgiving?

Did you know the pilgrim leader Governor William Bradford invited the Wampanoag Indians to join them for their feast?

Did you know that the celebration lasted for three whole days?

Thanksgiving Today

Did you know that California is the state that consumes the most turkey every year?

Did you know the average American consumes 16-18 lbs of turkey a year?

Did you know only the male turkeys gobble?

Did you know the average Thanksgiving turkey is 15 pounds?

Did you know that the heaviest turkey was 86 lbs? (The average size of a 5th grader!)

So, in honor of the holiday I've decided to do something a little different this year! We usually host Thanksgiving every year so I thought I would get a little crafty this year and have the kids help me as well. I've decided to make a "Be Thankful Tree." All you need is some small hands, colored construction paper in brown, yellow, orange and red.

1. Cut out a tree trunk from the brown construction paper.

2. Trace your little hands out onto the colored construction paper for the leaves.

3. Use scissors and cut out the leaves and number them 1-10. (1 for each guest depending on the number of guests)

4. Adhere the tree to the wall, refrigerator or poster board.

5. When guests arrive, they each get a leaf and a pen. Each guest needs to write what he or she is thankful for on the leaf and place it on the tree.

During dinner or dessert, everyone reads what he or she is thankful for from the "Be Thankful Tree."

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?
