Keeping the Kids Entertained in the Winter Months

December 15, 2011

It can be quite a challenge to keep everyone busy and happy during the winter months. Since I live on the East Coast, winters here seem to last for months! Luckily my kids love the snow and love to go sledding and all that fun winter stuff. As much as they love to get out there, it seems to take so long getting them dressed and into their snow gear! In the end it's totally worth it because my kids are happy. Plus, a little fresh air is great for them.

I've come up with a few ways to keep kids entertained this winter. Here are a few ideas!

Inside Fun

1. Use music to keep everyone happy! Put the music on have your kids play freeze dance. My kids love this game so much. I also have them march around the table to the music and I will stop the music and they freeze. This keeps them entertained even if it's only for ten minutes! We also play musical chairs.

2. Make forts! We often take sheets and drape them over furniture and my kids think this is the greatest thing ever. I will often get them a snack and they also have a little picnic. They will often request certain toys and books too which is fine because they get such a kick out of our home-made forts.

3. Cook with kids! I find that my two oldest children want to help me a lot in the kitchen. I will often give them bowls and spoons and let them help me cook or bake. It's nice to have some little helpers too and they are so proud of themselves when they see the finished product.

4. Recycle old crayons! Just take the paper off and break up old crayons into a muffin tin. Pre-heat the oven at 250 degrees and bake for 15-20 minutes. You can also use oven molds with shapes and designs the kids love! Once cooled, pop them out and give the kids some paper. This is definitely a hit in my house.

5. Make play dough! Combine 2 cups of flour, 1 cup salt, 1 tablespoon cream of tartar, 2 tablespoons of oil and 1 cup water with food coloring added. Cook all ingredients on low heat, stirring constantly. Remove and knead the dough. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic container.

Outside Fun

1. Make some good old-fashioned snow angels! Kids love doing this and I think some adults secretly do too!

2. Make snow art! Fill water bottles with food coloring and let the kids make designs in the snow.

3. Go on a treasure hunt. Snow or no snow kids will love doing this any time of the year! Before you head outside, draw up a quick pirates map to locate the treasure. You can bury anything in the snow or in the yard like under a rock or under a pile of sticks. No matter what the treasure is, kids will love this idea.

4. Make a snowman or have a snowball fight!

5. Sledding is always a favorite but what about rolling instead? Kids will love trying this.
